thanks for all the replies!

car's booked in the garage on monday to ahve a look at the leak which i assume is the water pump. theres invoices from last year for a pump and cambelt kit so i think it may have been done. i wont die in a ditch over it been done again tho if the garage recommend it. theres little history with it so i'm happy to start building some providence.

spoke to an alarm bloke near me today - didnt realise how little car alarm places they are now!- and he quoted £150 for a cat 2 immobilser and £350 for a hornet cat 1 alarm. prob go with the imobilser as wont be leaving it anywhere and cant be doing with any false alarms if its in my brothers garage over winter.

the R32 is looking sorry for its self stuck out in the elements. wife says the golf is worth twice as much so whys that stuck outside! i said not a problem, we'll move to a house with a double garage.

anyway, trying to keep her on side as my friend who owns a body shop is coming round tomo to cast a quick eye over it tomo. he hasnt seen it but said worse case if the filler is hiding rust, using a 309gti he did last year, would be new rear archs, sills and a respray for £2k...........well i did get it cheap! fingers crossed!

Despite these being everywhere when I was learning to driving (1993) the grand total of time spent in one must be less than 5 minutes, although that was split equally across a 1.6 and a 1.9. Even so, I recall how zingy they were, the 1.6 especially. It looks like a great project.

This is great advice. When I pulled my 1991 Porsche 944 apart it had an old alarm and a hardwired Nokia handsfree kit behind the dash. That was an immensely satisfying day removing all that.

so the good news or the terribly bad?!

the good is my friend with the body shop give her a quick once over and the arches and sills are solid, its also had a bit of paint that will polish up.

the incredibly bad is i took it to the garage to get the water leak fixed. ends up its probably the gasket :-( no oil in water etc so i asked how i could of known and they said i couldnt! ok, the wtaer leak pointed at an issue but i wouldnt have thought the head. but apparantly the pressure build up can cause the leak at a weak point.

anyway that garage wasnt to keen on working on an old car and i've found a peugeot specialist to take it to and have a look.

will keep you informed. and no one till the misses!

merry christmas

Awsome, I used to own a 1990 1.6, loved it wish I still had it, but sold it before I emigrated to Australia.

I would love one of these to restore, just haven’t got the space. That and of course not easy to find one.

Cars still the garage, no rush for it to be fair. They’ve had the head off and sent it away to the skimmers. Said they cld see the damage on the gasket so hopefully all will be ok.

I’ve asked the garage to take some photos as they re-build it if they can. Will post if they come off.

Did finally receive the V5 today, didn’t sent it off till after Xmas.

Not exactly one careful owner.....
